Content: Water Quality Solutions LLC, a new local engineering firm has completed its design and testing of a practical and cost-effective filtration system that will enable local roadway and state highway storm water to satisfy the requirements of the Federal Clean Water Act. In its final testing, the device successfully removed more than the required 80 percent of total suspended solids while also accommodating in excess of a 200 gallon per minute flow rate, or the equivalent of a two-year frequency storm event. The companyâ€™s innovative device has received positive attention from both the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, as well as affirmative interest from the Franklin County Engineerâ€™s Office. Both ODOT and Franklin County are currently moving forward with this water quality systemâ€™s initial installation on several roadway improvement projects. In 2013, the Ohio EPAâ€™s determined that the use of ODOTâ€™s sand-filled exfiltration trenches over the past ten years had not been effective and could no longer be used to satisfy Clean Water Act requirements. It was apparent that a viable solution to remove pollutants and suspended solids from roadway storm water was needed. Water Quality Solutions had already recognized this deficiency a few years before and conceived a modular design that is both efficient and economic in addressing the problem â€“ one that readily matches up with existing standard catch basins. In 2012, the company filed for patent protection on its designs and processes with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Since that time, Water Quality Solutions has collaborated with The Ohio State Universityâ€™s College of Engineering for refining and improving the final product. Over the past three years, teams of engineering students from the Collegeâ€™s multidisciplinary Capstone Program assisted in building and testing pre-production prototypes. The end result is a modular filtration device that not only meets current Ohio EPA requirements for addressing highway storm water, but is also easily and economically maintainable over the long run. Additionally, the flexible design can be adjusted to account for the diverse soil compositions that exist around the state and nation, as well as to address potentially more stringent requirements that can be expected in the future. In addition to helping resolve the Stateâ€™s highway storm water quality issues, all system components are being manufactured and assembled here in Ohio from recycled plastic and other local materials, creating more jobs for Ohioans. Emphasizing extra environmentally friendly features, the new filtration modules consist of fully re-usable elements that are expected to last for twenty years or more, generally requiring only a simple backwashing process once per year before redeploying. Each filtration module is capable of handling eight or more two-year storm events and accumulating up to 150 pounds of filtered material before needing replacement with a clean unit. Water Quality Solutions expects to install 20 to 40 units in each of several Franklin County and ODOT roadway projects around Ohio this spring.
